Troubleshooting
Problem
The HMC Change Internal Code Wizard is disabled and cannot be selected when the managed system is running on the permanent side of the firmware.
Resolving The Problem
Problem Description
The user is attempting an out-of-band firmware update using the HMC. The user selects Licensed Internal Code Maintenance, Licensed Internal Code Updates, Change Internal Code. After selecting the target and clicking OK, the Change Internal Code dialog is displayed; however, the Start Change Internal Code wizard option is disabled (grayed out) and cannot be selected. Only the View system information and Select advanced features options are available.
Problem Resolution
On the Change Internal Code dialog, select View system information, and click OK. On the Specify LIC Repository dialog, select a repository location of None. The Concurrent LIC update status field should have a value of Disabled. An additional field is displayed containing an explanation for the disablement. The usual cause is that the permanent flash side is active.

There are several methods that can be used to continue with the update. One method is to use the advanced options to do an install and activate; another is to power down and restart on the temporary side.
Method 1: Install and Activate
This method requires that all partitions be powered down. On the Change Internal Code dialog, select the Select Advanced features option, and click OK. On the Advanced Features dialog, select the option Install and Activate (implied Retrieve), and click OK to proceed.

Note that the Latest concurrent option will also be disabled. Concurrent updates cannot be applied while the server is on the P side.

Method 2: Change to the Temporary Side
To access the firmware power-on settings using the HMC, expand the managed environment, expand Server and Partition, and then select Server Management. In the right panel, right-click the managed system, and select properties. On the managed system properties dialog, click the Power-On Parameters tab. Under Advanced Options, click the Show Details radio button. The value in the Current column for the Power-on side parameter is the current firmware side.
Note: If the permanent side was used for recovery from an error in the temporary side firmware, contact your service provider before proceeding. The error must be resolved before switching back to the temporary side.
To change to the T side, click the drop-down list box in the Next column, and select Temporary. The new value will go into effect on the next managed system restart.

After the restart, use the desired method to perform the server firmware update. Concurrent updates, if available, can be loaded while the partitions are active.
