CATPCA error message states some variables have 0 variance

Troubleshooting

Problem

I have a set of binary and ordinal items with which I want to perfom principal component analysis, using the CATPCA procedure in SPSS Categories. The binary items are coded as 0 and 1 and identified as nominal in the CATPCA scaling dialog. The ordinal variables are coded as integer values 1 through 6. When I run CATPCA with these designations, the procedure prints an error message which indicates that my binary variables have 0 variance, so the command is not executed. When I run Descriptives or Frequencies on these variables, I can see that all of them have nonzero variance (i.e. both 0 and 1 are observed on each of the binary items) and that no cases have been dropped for missing values. Why does CATPCA report that my binary variables have variances of 0?
