Cannot use a variable that points to a folder to add an entry to the Build Path

Troubleshooting

Problem

This technote explains why attempts to add a directory to the java build path fails after creating a variable (New Variable Classpath Entry) to point to a folder using IBM® Rational® Application Developer version 7.

Symptom

If you have created a variable (New Variable Classpath Entry) that points to a folder, and trying to add this entire directory -- referenced by the variable --- to the java build path.

Attempting to do so will get an error dialog such as the one below

Variable points to a folder : Use 'Extend ...' to select an archive inside the folder.
