Problem

When installing Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server using ServerGuide, you are prevented from entering a dash character (-) in the Computer Name field on the General Setup Screen.

Symptom

When installing Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server using ServerGuide, you are prevented from entering a dash character (-) in the Computer Name field on the General Setup Screen.  

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer xSeries servers:  

  • An xSeries 440, type 8687, any model
  • An xSeries 360, type 8686, any model
  • An xSeries 350, type 8682, any model
  • An xSeries 345, type 8670, any model
  • An xSeries 342, type 8669, any model
  • An xSeries 335, type 8830, any model
  • An xSeries 335, type 8676, any model
  • An xSeries 330, type 8675, any model
  • An xSeries 330, type 8674, any model
  • An xSeries 330, type 8654, any model
  • An xSeries 305, type 8673, any model
  • An xSeries 300, type 8672, any model
  • An xSeries 255, type 8685, any model
  • An xSeries 250, type 8665, any model
  • An xSeries 240, type 8664, any model
  • An xSeries 235, type 8671, any model
  • An xSeries 232, type 8668, any model
  • An xSeries 230, type 8658, any model
  • An xSeries 225, type 8647, any model
  • An xSeries 205, type 8480, any model

The system is being configured with the one of the following versions of ServerGuide:  

  • ServerGuide 6.1.2
  • ServerGuide 6.1.3

The following operating systems are affected:  

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, with any Service Pack applied
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, with any Service Pack applied

Solution

This behavior is corrected in the latest release of ServerGuide, available from IBM ServerGuide electronic fulfillment.

Workaround

Enter a valid computer name (without dashes) on the General Setup Screen in ServerGuide. Once Windows 2000 is installed, complete the following steps to change the computer name:  

  1. Right click on My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click the Network Identification tab.
  4. Click on the Properties button.
  5. Change the Computer Name field to the desired name (with dashes).
  6. Click OK to dismiss the Identification changes dialog.
  7. Click OK to dismiss the System Properties dialog.

Additional information

An error was introduced into ServerGuide 6.1.2 which prevents you from entering a dash character (-) in the Computer's Name field on the General Setup Screen of ServerGuide Windows 2000 installation.
