BMC connection lost after flashing Broadcom firmware - Servers

Troubleshooting

Problem

When applying the DOS-based Broadcom Firmware update version 2.03, connectivity with the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) network interface is lost. This issue occurs only when one of the new CPU FRUs below are installed: FRU 44R5644, Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor E5405 2.0GHZ/1333MHz/12MB L2 80W FRU 44R5645, Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor E5410 2.33GHZ/1333MHz/12MB L2 80W FRU 44R5646, Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor E5420 2.5GHZ/1333MHz/12MB L2 80W FRU 44R5647, Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor E54302.66GHZ/1333MHz/12MB L2 80W FRU 44R5648, Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor E5440 2.83GHZ/1333MHz/12MB L2 80W FRU 44R5649, Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor E5450 3.0GHZ/1333MHz/12MB L2 80W FRU 44E5117, Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor X5450 3.0GHZ/1333MHz/12MBL2 120W FRU 44E5066, Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor X5460 3.16GHZ/1333MHz/12MB L2 120W

Symptom

When applying the DOS-based Broadcom Firmware update version 2.03, connectivity with the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) network interface is lost.

This issue occurs only when one of the new CPU FRUs below are installed:

  • Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor E5405 2.0GHZ/1333MHz/12MB L2 80W, Option part number 44R5630, Replacement part number 44R5644
  • Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor E5410 2.33GHZ/1333MHz/12MB L2 80W, Option part number 44R5631, Replacement part number 44R5645
  • Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor E5420 2.5GHZ/1333MHz/12MB L2 80W, Option part number 44R5632, Replacement part number 44R5646
  • Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor E5430 2.66GHZ/1333MHz/12MB L2 80W, Option part number 44R5633, Replacement part number 44R5647
  • Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor E5440 2.83GHZ/1333MHz/12MB L2 80W, Option part number 40K1234, Replacement part number 44R5648
  • Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor E5450 3.0GHZ/1333MHz/12MB L2 80W, Option part number 44R5635, Replacement part number 44R5649
  • Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor X5450 3.0GHZ/1333MHz/12MB L2 120W, Option part number 44e5122, Replacement part number 44E5117
  • Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor X5460 3.16GHZ/1333MHz/12MB L2 120W, Option part number 44E5057, Replacement part number 44E5066
Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • System x3550, type 1013, any model
  • System x3550, type 1913, any model
  • System x3550, type 7978, any model

This tip is not option specific.

The DOS-based v2.03 firmware for the Broadcom NIC is affected.

This tip is not software specific.

Solution

This behavior will be corrected in a future release of Broadcom firmware.

The Target date for this release is scheduled for First Quarter 2008.

The file will be available from the IBM System x Support web site at the following URL:

Workaround

To recover BMC network connectivity after flashing the Broadcom NIC firmware, using the DOS-based flash utility v2.03, shut down the server and remove power. Then, re-apply power and restart the server.

This issue does not occur using the Microsoft Windows or Linux- based Broadcom Firmware updates.
