Battery issues reported while running 7.86.49.00. Cache disabled.

Troubleshooting

Problem

While running the 7.86.49.00 firmware, a user may experience battery failures on one or both controllers. Replacing batteries does not resolve the problem.

Symptom

The following MEL events may be seen:

- Incomplete battery learn cycle (Event 730F)
- Discrete lines diagnostic failure (Event 2836)
- Controller cache not enabled or was internally disabled (Event 210A)

In addition, the battery status may be one of the following:
- Battery maintenance charging
- Learning cycle
- Failed
- Optimal
- Unavailable
- Battery full charging

Depending upon the status of the battery, the write cache may be disabled thus impacting the performance of the system.

Cause

This issue is not a problem with the battery or other hardware, but is a result of a firmware defect in the 7.86.49.00 release. The firmware defect was the result of an incorrect fix in 7.86.49.00 which produced a false discrete line failure condition.

Environment

This problem may affect either the DS3500 or DCS3700 (base controller only) while running the 7.86.49.00 firmware.

Resolving The Problem

The 7.86.51.00 and later release of the 7.86 controller firmware corrects this firmware defect. The 7.86.51.00 release is available on the firmware download pages for the referenced products .
