Basic input/output systems (BIOS) cannot be updated from within Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 - IBM IntelliStation E Pro

Symptom

When attempting to flash an IntelliStation E Pro (6204 or 6214) system's basic input/output systems (BIOS), using 20JY34USA.EXE, you might see the error message "6930 cannot find MFC42.DLL."

NOTE: You will not be able to flash the system BIOS from within the operating system.

Affected configurations

The system might be any of the following IBM IntelliStations:

• An IntelliStation E Pro, type 6204, any model
• An IntelliStation E Pro, type 6214, any model

The system is configured with one processor.

The BIOS level(s) affected is 20KT25AUS.

The following network operating systems (NOS(es) is the Microsoft Windows NT WorkStation 4.0 with Service Pack 6 applied.

Solution

This behavior will be corrected in the next BIOS or Firmware release.

The target date for the release is scheduled for June or July, 2002. You will be able to view the release from the following url address:

Workaround

There are two options. There is one software based and one hardware based. (The hardware based option requires powering down the system.)

Option 1 (Software)

Copy the MFC42.DLL and MSVCR.DLL from a Windows 2000 SP2 installation to the Windows NT 4.0 SP6 installation.

1. Place a blank, formatted floppy disk in Drive A:.
2. From within Windows 2000, complete the following steps:
   1. Click the Start button.
   2. Click Search.
   3. Click For Files or Folders.
3. Into the Search for files or folders named: field, complete the following steps:
   1. Input MFC42.DLL.
   2. Click Search Now.
4. In the results window, right-click the MFC42.DLL and complete the following steps:
   1. Click Send To.
   2. Click 3.5 Floppy (A:).
5. Into the Search for files or folders named: field, complete the following steps:
   1. Input MSVCR.DLL.
   2. Click Search Now.
6. In the results window, right-click the MSVCR.DLL and complete the following steps:
   1. Click Send To.
   2. Click 3.5 Floppy (A:).
7. Remove the diskette and place it into the E Pro diskette drive.
8. Copy the two files to the c:\WINNT\System32\ directory.
9. The Flash BIOS can now be updated.

Option 2 (Hardware)

Move the CMOS recover jumper J33 on the system board to pins 2-3.

1. Power down the system unit. Remove the power cord from the system unit.
2. Remove the cover of the system unit.
3. Follow the proper electrostatic discharge (ESD) procedures before working inside of the system unit.

4. Move the jumper J33 to pins 2-3. (A graphic (showing the location of this jumper) is on page 28 of the hardware maintenance manual (HMM) - IBM IntelliStation E Pro Type 6204 and Type 6214.)
5. Replace the system unit cover and plug in the system unit power cord.
6. Flash the system BIOS from within the operating system.
7. Power down the system unit and remove the power cord.
8. Move the jumper J33 to pins 1-2.
9. Replace the system unit cover and plug in the system unit power cord.

Additional information

The MFC42.DLL and MSVCR.DLL were not included in the update package from Phoenix.

The above listed files will be available in the future releases of the system BIOS update.
