Asynchronous Protocol
Asynchronous (async) is a communications protocol that transmits one byte of information at a time at irregular time intervals. A start bit (one character) precedes the byte (eight characters) of information and a stop bit (one character) follows the byte. Sometimes a parity (checking) bit is included in the transmission to ensure data integrity. The sending and receiving computers do not have to be synchronized.
