ASM library conflict causes NoSuchMethodError with Rule Execution Server

Troubleshooting

Problem

Rule Execution Server (RES) ruleset invocations fail because the version of the ASM library provided by the application server is not the version expected by (and also bundled with) the Execution Unit (XU). This can be the case for example when using WebSphere Business Services Fabric, or when using WebSphere Application Server along with the Feature Pack for Web Services.

Symptom

Rule execution fails with a stack trace such as:

java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org/objectweb/asm/ClassWriter.<init>(I)V
 at ilog.rules.res.session.impl.IlrStatelessSessionBase.execute
(IlrStatelessSessionBase.java:107)
...
