IBM Support

Application terminates with system abend EC6

Troubleshooting

Problem

When starting an application that runs as a z/OS UNIX thread, the application ends with a system abend EC6.

Symptom

Inability to start z/OS UNIX applications; may see codes of C008 or reason code ending with 00FB.

Cause

The abend EC6 completion code is defined in MVS System Codes as an error occurring during the processing of a callable service to z/OS UNIX System Services (z/OS UNIX). MVS System Codes also defines C008 as an inability to dub the process. Additionally, the 00FB reason code signifies JRSAFUSERNOOMVS, which is defined in the UNIX System Services Messages and Codes and means the user is not authorized to use OMVS. This occurs when a user ID attempts to access z/OS UNIX but does not have an OMVS segment defined in the security product.

Environment

Any application that runs as a z/OS UNIX thread. For the z/OS Communications Server, this includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • TCPIP stack
  • FTPD
  • OSNMPD
  • OMPROUTE
  • RSHD
  • SYSLOGD

Diagnosing The Problem

If a dump is produced or if the general registers at the time of the abend are displayed, register 15 will end with C008. The dump or the display may show a reason code of 00FB.

Resolving The Problem

Add an OMVS segment for the affected user ID in the security product. You can find more information on OMVS segments in "Requirement for an OMVS Segment" section of the IP Configuration Guide.
