Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of z/VM. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: APPLY PTF * **************************************************************** This is the APAR for z/VM 7.4 VMSES Feature Pack 1. As such it contains the following new functions: 1. Support for z/VM environment variables for linear service. New z/VM environment variables for SERVICE provide the ability to easily determine the latest service installed for each product or component on a z/VM 7.4 system. These new SERVICE z/VM environment variables allow administrators or automation to view the linear service level from CP, CMS or a Linux guest. 2. SERVICE STATUS command updates that add a new LEVELS operand and updates/changes the existing RSU operand. A LEVELS operand is added for the SERVICE STATUS command. The LEVELS operand effectively works as has the RSU operand, prior to this APAR. That is, the LEVELS operand displays the service level specified on the :SERVLEV tag in the System_level Service Update Facility table (VM SYSSUF). The RSU operand now displays the most recently applied RSU, based on the RSU product contents directory file.

The following parts have been updated: $CSMUTL$ $EXEC $VMFUTL$ $EXEC SERVICE $EXEC VMFINS $EXEC VMFMHR $EXEC VMFPSU $EXEC VMFSUFIN $EXEC VMFSUFTB $EXEC VMFTBDEF $EXEC VMFUME REPOS When service is applied to a component or product, SERVICE command processing now creates/updates a new VM SYSVRSN file (the System-Level Version Information Table) on the Software Inventory disk (MAINTvrm 51D). This file contains a list of product IDs for the z/VM base components, along with PTF, APAR and linear service level information. SERVICE command processing then uses the information in this file to build z/VM environment variables, in the form of: ZVM.SERVICE.APAR.component ppnnnnn ZVM.SERVICE.COMPONENTS component_list ZVM.SERVICE.LEVEL.component ffxx ZVM.SERVICE.VERSION.component v.r.ff.xx where: 'component' is a z/VM base component that pertains to a given z/VM service level 'ppnnnnn' is the APAR number of the highest-level PTF applied to the subject component 'component_list' is the set of z/VM base components that pertain to a given z/VM service level 'ffxx' is the currently-applied numeric feature pack or fix pack level identifier 'v.r.ff.xx' is the semantic version identifier for the component, with respective values: 'v' is the z/VM version number 'r' is the z/VM release number 'ff' is the feature pack number 'xx' is the fix pack number The z/VM environment variables are set via the CP SET VARIABLE SYSTEM command, for the subject system, and for any active SSI member systems that comprise an SSI cluster environment. In addition, related SYSTEM CONFIG file statements, for setting the same environment variables and values, are placed in a new file named <sysname> IBMCONF on the PMAINT CF0 parm disk. This file can be imbedded in the system configuration file (SYSTEM CONFIG). Also, code has been updated to support a new LEVELS operand on the SERVICE STATUS command, which includes a change in the function of the existing RSU operand for the SERVICE STATUS command. The LEVELS operand effectively works as has the existing RSU operand, prior to this code update. The processing of the RSU operand has been modified, so that a SERVICE STATUS RSU command now displays the most recent applied RSU. When SERVICE command processing applies an RSU, a new file VM RSURECS (the System-level RSU Receive Status Table) is created/updated on the Software Inventory disk (MAINTvrm 51D). This file contains a list of all products that have received service from an RSU, along with the RSU level. The RSU level is of the form RSU-vrnn where: 'vr' is the z/VM version/release 'nn' is a sequential number for an RSU instance. For example, RSU-7403, which indicates the third z/VM 7.4.0 RSU. The data in this new file is used when a SERVICE STATUS RSU command is processed. The command displays the most recent RSU that has been applied. For example, the command SERVICE CP STATUS RSU produces a result similar to: SERVICE CP STATUS RSU VMFUTL2767I Reading VMFINS DEFAULTS B for additional options VMFUTL2767I Reading VMSESE PROFILE B for additional options VMFSRV2195I SERVICE CP STATUS RSU VMFSRV2760I SERVICE processing started VMFSRV1225I CP (7VMCPR40%CP) RSU status: RSU-7403 VMFSRV2760I SERVICE processing completed successfully (RC=0) Ready; In addition, the following HELP files have been updated: SERVICE HELPVMSE VMF1225I HELPMSG VMF1821E HELPMSG VMF2774I HELPMSG VMF4004E HELPMSG VMF4004W HELPMSG VMF4600I HELPMSG The following new help files are supplied: VMF2515I HELPMSG VMF2516W HELPMSG VMF2517I HELPMSG VMF2518I HELPMSG VMF2519W HELPMSG VMF2520E HELPMSG VMF2521E HELPMSG VMF2522E HELPMSG VMF2523E HELPMSG VMF2524W HELPMSG VMF2525E HELPMSG VMF2526I HELPMSG VMF2527W HELPMSG VMF2777E HELPMSG VMF4020E HELPMSG VMF4600E HELPMSG VMF4600W HELPMSG The following z/VM 7.4.0 publications have been updated: General Information (GC24-6286-74) Migration Guide (GC24-6294-74) Other Components Messages and Codes (GC24-6300-74) Service Guide (GC24-6325-74) VMSES/E Introduction and Reference (GC24-6336-74) These publications are available at the z/VM web site https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/zvm/7.4
