APAR status

  • Closed as new function.

Error description

  • This APAR changes CP and some IPLable utilities to allocate a
    larger dump save area.
The larger area is required for a future stand-alone dump
program upgrade. It is compatible with the current stand-
alone dump program that z/VM currently ships.

This APAR makes changes to CP and some IPLable utilities to
be ready for a future stand-alone dump program upgrade.
Future levels of the stand-alone dump program require the
program being dumped to allocate a larger dump save area.

Comments

  • This APAR makes changes to CP and some IPLable utilities to be
ready for a future stand-alone dump program upgrade. Future
levels of the stand-alone dump program require the program
being dumped to allocate a larger crashkernel area (the memory
save area used by stand-alone dump). The area is being
increased from 128 MB to 255 MB. CP allocates the area above
2 GB if enough memory is available above 2 GB.

For systems running first-level, the minimum amount of real
memory required to IPL z/VM is increasing from 256 MB to 512 MB
so that a crashkernel area will always be allocated on first-
level systems. For second-level systems, z/VM will continue
to IPL when only 128 MB of memory is present; it just doesn't
allocate the crashkernel area unless at least 511 MB of memory
    is present.

Also, stand-alone dumpable programs SAPL (HCPSAL) and DDR
(HCPDDR) have been changed to allocate the larger dump
    savearea.

This Apar also changes the minimum amount of virtual storage
required to run SDINST Utility to 512 MB instead of 256 MB.

    Documentation changes:

    - The text of message HCP8641E is updated to say that at least
512 MB is required to run SDINST.

    - Part of the Operator Response of message HCP955W is changed
to say "The minimum amount of real memory to IPL z/VM as a
      first-level system is 512 MB."

    - The Explanation of message HCP4523W was changed to say that
CP only allocates crashkernel memory for stand-alone dump
if there is at least 511 MB of memory in the LPAR or userid
where it is running. Previously at least 256 MB was
      necessary.
    - In the CP PLANNING AND ADMINISTRATION book, Chapter 21
Table 33, on the line that says "Minimum real memory size to
      IPL z/VM as a first-level system", in columns under z/VM 7.2
and 7.3, change 256 MB to 512 MB.

    - In two tables in the GENERAL INFORMATION book, changes are
made that are similar to the one in CP PLANNING AND ADMIN
      book.
