CP APAR VM66201 introduces z/XC Architecture Support that allows
a z/Architecture virtual machine to exploit VM Data Spaces.
There are changes needed in z/Architecture CMS to take full
    advantage of this function.

Comments

  • Changes have been made to
    .
      1. save and restore only the high-order words of the 64-bit
registers except in the Program FLIH (DMSZITP). The
associated data structures have been changed to reserve
the second half of 128-byte large register save areas
so that their sizes remain unchanged.
          .
      2. substitute a 64-bit failing storage address in message
DMS318T and to convert an eight-byte failing storage
address to an ESA/390-compatible four-byte address if
the high-order four bytes are zero. Data structure
changes are made to the z/Architecture version of NUCON
to correct the failing storage address size.
          .
      3. provide a 128-byte static save area containing the 64-bit
registers to the CMS Multitasking first level interrupt
          handler.
          .
      4. If issuing IPL ZCMS in more than 128G of virtual storage,
the ZCMS initialization code now sets the ZCMS maximum
virtual storage size to 128G. This does not affect the
actual virtual machine storage size, but it does limit
the amount of virtual storage available to applications
          running in ZCMS.
          .

    CHAPTER: 3 PAGE: 175
    ABSTRACT: Update message DMS749T
    BODY:

DMS749T The variations of this message are explained below.

-Cannot enter z/Architecture mode - issuing SET MACHINE ESA#IPL.

-Cannot run in z/Architecture mode - issuing SET MACHINE XC#IPL.

    Explanation:

The first variation of this message indicates that
z/Architecture CMS was IPLed in an XC-mode virtual machine whose
architecture is incompatible with the CP implementation of XC
    support.

The second variation of this message indicates that a CMS
designed to be run in ESA/390 or ESA/XC architecture was IPLed
in a MACHINE Z virtual machine, which supports only
    z/Architecture.

    System action:

In both cases, the system issues the SET MACHINE command to
reset the virtual machine architecture mode so that it is
compatible with the version of CMS requested, and then issues
the IPL command to re-IPL the originally specified version of
    CMS.

    User response:

In the case of the first variation of the message, install a
later version of CP that has z/XC support.
