APAR status

Error description

  • A Protect Exception PRG004 can occur in HCPSXA, if the system is
defined with less than 2G of storage.

Local fix

  • Temporarily define systems with 2G of storage

In systems smaller than 2GB, the System Execution Space
Management Table (SXSTB) is built in two parts. The first part
is active, the second part is reserved and Page Protected. CP
services searching for contiguous pages in System Execution
Space may exceed the active part and attempt to update the
protected part, leading to a protection exception abend PRG004.

Problem conclusion

  • PEVM66173.  With code for APAR VM66328 applied, HCPSXA
does not search for contiguous pages beyond the SXSTB
active range.
