Error description
Attempting to clone a disk on an ESE volume using DirMaint CLONEDISK (non-persistent flashcopy) is failing. A CC of 0 from DirMaint is returned but no data is actually copied. CP APAR VM66565 has been opened to fix a problem which causes the flashcopy to fail. Based on old behavior from the original track space efficient support in Flashcopy, the NOCOPY bit on the flashcopy request is being set by default for space efficient target devices. This bit should no longer be set allowing the copy to occur. During the debug of the CP flachcopy problem it was determined the SEF indicator for Q V DETAILS output for DASD devices was only being set for old style trace space efficent disks. The fix for the missing SEF indicator will also be fixed by the CP APAR. This DirMaint APAR has been created to remove a check for the SEF indicator which would prevent DirMaint from falling back to DDR in case a flashcopy error copying to a targt space-efficient volume. Now that the SEF indicator will be correctly returned once the CP APAR is applied, the code in DirMaint is being removed to allow the failover to DDR for ESE in all cases.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: Users of the DirMaint CLONEDISK command with * * Space Efficient disks. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: APPLY PTF * **************************************************************** Attempting to clone a disk on an Extent Space Efficient (ESE) volume using the DirMaint CLONEDISK (non-persistent flashcopy) command does not appear to be working. A condition code of 0 from DirMaint is returned but no data is copied. During the processing of the FLASHCOPY to the ESE devices, the target device took on the behavior of a persistent flashcopy request with NOCOPY specified. To resolve the failure of the DirMaint CLONEDISK command to copy the data from the source disk to the target disk when ESE volumes are involved, z/VM CP APAR VM66565 must be applied. In addition, CP APAR VM66565 also corrects the output of the Query VIRTUAL DETAILS and Query VIRTUAL DASD DETAILS commands for Extent Space Efficient (ESE) disks. The code was not properly setting the 'SEF' indicator for ESE volumes. The DirMaint code in exec DVHDXD, used during CLONEDISK processing, is issuing QUERY VIRTUAL <vdev> DETAILS and looking for the 'SEF' keyword to determine whether or not a DDR failover should occur. Since the command was never emitting the 'SEF' keyword, the DDR failover was not allowed. With the update for APAR VM66565, it is possible DirMaint will parse the output, find the 'SEF' keyword and send back an error message when DirMaint should instead be ignoring the keyword and allowing a DDR failover for the ESE device.
Problem conclusion
The DirMaint DVHDXD EXEC has been updated to remove the QUERY VIRTUAL <vdev> DETAILS command and the code parsing the results for the 'SEF' keywork. This will allow DDR failover for Extent Space Efficient (ESE) devices.
