APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Performing an action that results in all EDEV paths
associated with a particular FCP device being removed
may result in an error. These actions can include
toggling the CHPID associated with the FCP device or
removing paths manually via the SET EDEVICE command.
The errors that may be encountered may be abends
    (HTT001, PRG009, PRG004, SZT001) or a failure
with return code 106 when attempting to add a path
back to the FCP device that was impacted.

Local fix

  • VARY OFF CHPID xx FORCE to affected FCP channel

    ****************************************************************
When an FCP device is shared between multiple EDEVICEs and all
paths using that FCP device are removed (either because the FCP
device is removed or because SET EDEVICE commands were used to
remove the paths), the z/VM SCSI driver does not always
successfully update the structures associated with the device.
The failure is primarily driven by serialization deficiencies,
which means it is timing dependent and may not always occur.
Depending on the timing and the workload running over the
device, the problem may present itself in a variety of ways: an
    abend ( ABENDSZC001 , ABENDPRG004 , ABENDHTT001 , ABENDSZT001 ,
    ABENDPRG009 , or ABENDSZV001 ), an error code 106 attempting
to write to the device subchannel, or the inability to vary a
    device off successfully.

Problem conclusion

  • Code has been updated to properly serialize data structure
updates when paths are removed from EDEVICEs. Code has also
been changed to properly re-initialize some fields in data
structures when all paths associated with a given FCP device are
    removed.
