z/VM currently has no recognition of Extent Space Efficient
capability or events related to usage of such disk space. In
addition, these devices can currently only be used for guest
    disks.

Comments

  • Support has been added to enable guest and host recognition
and exploitation of Extent Space Efficient Thin Provisioned
volumes. The following new features for these ESE devices
    are now available:

    1) Pool space events (space warning, out of space, space
constraint relieved) are now reported to OPERATOR.
    2) The new RELSPACE command to return disk space back to
       the pool.
    3) Query command enhancements to indicate a devices ESE
support and to check pool space usage.
    4) Unlike Track Space Efficient (TSE) devices, ESE volumes
can contain CPOWNED and System Resident space once the
       device is fully provisioned.
    5) Flashcopy commands updated to release allocated space
when full volume extents are withdrawn.
    6) Simulation of ESE related I/O commands for guest
dedicated disks and full pack and 1-END minidisks.
