Comments

  • This APAR will provide support for the IBM z14 and must be
applied as part of upgrading z/VM to support the z14 (see
"installing z/VM on the IBM z14" section below). The
following facilities are supported for guest exploitation in
    z/VM 6.3.0 and z/VM 6.4.0 on the z14 GA1 processor:

         - ESA/390-Compatibility-Mode Facility
         - Miscellaneous-Instruction-Extensions Facility 2
         - Vector Enhancements Facility 1
         - Vector Packed Decimal Facility
         - Message-Security-Assist Extension 6
         - Message-Security-Assist Extension 7
         - Message-Security_Assist Extension 8

This APAR also includes support for the following items in
    z/VM 6.3.0 and z/VM 6.4.0:

         - Both shared and dedicated guest use of the new CEX6S
           crypto card.
         - Crypto Clear Key ECC operations: Clear-key Elliptic
Curve Cryptographic (ECC) operations are supported for
guests enrolled in the z/VM-managed shared-crypto queue
(APVIRT). The shared-crypto queue must be configured
with CCA coprocessor domains in order for the function
to be virtualized for guest use.
         - CPU Measurement Facility (CPUMF) counter enhancements.
         - Dynamic I/O support: Dynamic I/O support is provided
for managing the configuration of OSA-Express6S OSD
CHPIDs, FICON Express16S+ FC and FCP CHPIDs, and
Regional Crypto Enablement (RCE), zHyperLink, and
RoCE Express2 adapters. The available PTF for APAR
VM65865 provides dynamic I/O support for the Coupling
           Express LR adapter in z/VM V6.3.0 and z/VM V6.4.0,
and is applicable to both z13 and z14.
         - RoCE Express2 support: Guest exploitation support for
RoCE Express 2 allows the adapters to be brought
online and attached to supporting guests for
           exploitation.
         - Improved memory management efficiency: the IBM z14
processor design allows greater concurrency in address
translation. This improvement may increase z/VM
workloads' performance compared to z13, particularly
when z/VM is configured to exploit multithreading.
         - Alternate subchannel set dynamic I/O support: z/VM
6.4.0 provides dynamic I/O commands within the z/VM
hypervisor for supporting define, modify, and delete of
a device within either the default or alternate
subchannel sets. HCD support is currently not available.

The following items are supported on z/VM 6.4.0 only:

         - Instruction simulation counters by virtual CPU in z/VM
           monitor data.
         - Firmware assist for invalid-but-resident page
           revalidation to improve workload performance.

NOTE: it is always recommended to apply the compatibility
APARs to z/VM before upgrading your hardware. The z14
compatibility PTF for z/VM 6.3.0 and z/VM 6.4.0 must be
installed before moving your z/VM system to the z14.

Installing z/VM on the IBM z14:

z/VM V6.3.0 cannot be installed directly on an IBM z14 server.
Instead, z/VM V6.3.0 must be installed on a prior IBM Z server
and the PTFs for APARs VM65942 and its prereqs, VM65921,
and VM65922 must be applied prior to moving the image to z14.
After applying all required service and before IPLing z/VM
V6.3.0 on an IBM z14 server, an updated Standalone Program
Loader (SAPL) must be installed by using the updated SALIPL
MODULE provided by the PTF for APAR VM65856. Otherwise, z/VM
V6.3.0 will not successfully IPL on a z14 server.
++ For instructions on installing SAPL, refer to
++ Chapter 2 of the z/VM System Operation 6.3 manual.
In Addition, after applying the PTFs for APARs VM65921 and
VM65922, the stand-alone dump program must be re-installed
      using the updated SDINST utility.

      z/VM V6.4.0 can be installed directly on a z14 server with a
V640 install image obtained from IBM after August 25, 2017.
The PTF for APAR VM65942 must be applied immediately after
      installing z/VM V6.4.0.

    SSI Considerations:

The available PTF for prereq APAR VM65976 provides
infrastructure support for ESA/390 compatibility mode within
z/VM V6.2.0, V6.3.0, and V6.4.0, and must be installed on all
members of an SSI cluster before any z/VM V6.3.0 or V6.4.0
member of the cluster is run on an IBM z14 server.

For additional details see the PSP bucket: 3906DEVICE
    3906/ZVM subset.
