Error description

  • A user can start an edit session for an IBM i member on the
RDi client, for a new or existing member on the host.

If the user then disconnects from the host in the RDi client,
or stops and restarts the RDi workbench, the member lock held
by the RDi client connection is lost, and some other user or
job may delete the member on the host.

If the user has not closed the editor view for the member,
they may then try to save the member (to the host). The RDi
client detects the member is missing on the host and prompts
the user with a dialog asking them if the they want to create
the member. If they respond yes, the member should be
created and the edit contents saved.

In RDi 9.0, with this scenario, a null pointer error occurs and
the editor contents do not get saved to the host.

    When this error occurs:
    - The NPE can be seen in the workspace error log.
    - The editor view continues to indicate it has un-saved changes.
    - When the user tries to save again, a second time, they are
presented with a remote member out of sync dialog. From
that, if they choose to use the member contents from the
host (which will be empty), they will lose the source in
the editor view, which gets replaced with the
(newly-created) empty member content from the host.

This error scenario also occurs in previous versions of RD
Power if the preference (Objects Subsystem -> Expand tree on
    resource creation) is un-checked.
