Error description

  • Rebooting an Oracle Solaris SPARC host where IBM Rational
ClearCase Multi-Version File System (MVFS) is in use may result
in a system hang requiring a forced panic to bring the machine
    down.

Steps to reproduce: The exact conditions to reproduce this issue
    are currently unknown.

Workaround: There are no known workarounds. However the problem
has only been observed when running /usr/sbin/reboot without
stopping ClearCase or other services. Please note the following
from the Solaris man page for reboot:

    NOTES
The reboot utility does not execute the scripts
    in
/etc/rcnum.d or execute shutdown actions in inittab(4).
    To
ensure a complete shutdown of system services,
    use
shutdown(1M) or init(1M) to reboot a Solaris system.

Additionally, Oracle notes in the Solaris Information Library
suggest to 'use either the shutdown or the init command to shut
down a system. Both commands performa a clean system shutdown,
which means that all system processes and services are
    terminated normally.'

    66.html#hbsyshalt-34923

The notes here on reboot indicate that 'the init command is the
preferred method.' Thus in most cases shutdown or init to Run
level 6 (reboot) should be given preference over reboot.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    * Rebooting an Oracle Solaris system running IBM Rational *
    * ClearCase dynamic views, without first executing commands to *
    * stop ClearCase, may result in a system hang or a system *
    * panic with the message "mvfs: LOCK: recursive lock". *

Problem conclusion

  • A locking protocol in ClearCase has been modified to handle race
conditions occurring during system shutdown. This is fixed in
    ClearCase 8.0.1.7.
