Error description

  • You are using IBM SPSS Statistics to generate tabular output
(e.g. Custom Tables) and want to export the tables to an
html-format file. You have two options: 1) using the Output
Management System (OMS) to capture the tables into an external
html file as they are created, or 2) using the OUTPUT EXPORT
command to export the tables from the output viewer after they
    are already created.

You notice that the two methods of export seem to give different
results. For example, one of the tables cells is shown in the
output as "2%". When you double-click on the table to activate
it in the table editor, and then click into that particular cell
to see the full contents, it shows "2.500000". When you export
the table to html using OUTPUT EXPORT, the cell shows "2%" but
when you create the exported html file using OMS that cell shows
    "3%".

Local fix

  • The difference is likely the result of the two different
procedures using different but equally valid rounding schemes --
and the data values must be rounded for export to html because
they become hard-coded into the file. In this example, the
underlying value of 2.500000 is formatted for display as F2.0 --
so 2% is displayed because the table object is using a "round to
even" scheme for 5s: 2.5 would round to 2, but 3.5 would round
    to 4.

The OUTPUT EXPORT command is either replicating this rounding
scheme to create the html or merely capturing exactly what the
table in the output is displaying. The OMS functionality,
however, appears to create the rounded value for export on its
own, and using the "round higher" scheme: 2.5 rounds to 3, 3.5
    rounds to 4, etc.

While therefore neither result is technically incorrect, it's
reasonable to expect that all methods should be consistent
across the application. The issue has been filed with SPSS
    Statistics R&D.

Problem conclusion

  • This issue has been addressed in IBM SPSS Statistics 21.0 and
later releases. The different methods of export (i.e., OMS vs.
OUTPUT EXPORT) now use the same rounding algorithms.
