Error description

  • Caching is enabled for a Tivoli Storage Manager disk storage
pool. When a client backs up files to this storage pool, and the
storage pool does not have enough space, then the server
attempts to delete a batch of cached bitfiles from the pool to
    make space available.

If a migration process is running at the same time as this batch
delete of cached files there is the potential for a deadlock to
occur between the migration and delete activity.

The activity log will report occurances of
ANR0379W A server database deadlock situation has been
encountered; the lock request for the bf aggregate
(superbitfile) id lock, <superbitfileid> will be denied to
    resolve the deadlock.
If the support command SHOW DEADLOCK is used to capture the
symptom, the following will be reported:
    ANS8000I Server command: 'SHOW DEADLOCK'
     A Deadlock was found:
     Transaction <TXN 1>.
Waiting for Lock mode xLock on: Type=46001(bf aggregate
    (superbitfile) id), NameSpace=0, Key='<A KEY>'
Held by transaction <TXN 2> in mode xLock.
     Transaction <TXN 2>.
Waiting for Lock mode ixLock on: Type=47051(df bitfile root),
    NameSpace=0, Key=''
Held by transaction <TXN 1> in mode ixLock.
You face this symptom if you see the deadlock with the request
for lock type 47051 while migration is running for a cached
enabled storage pool with current client backup activity.

      Initial Impact: Medium
      Additional Keywords: TSM

Local fix

  • disable caching for the disk storage pool or ensure enough disk
space exists to avoid migration needing to process while backups
    are running
