Error description
Error Description: Running the "createCluster" administrative command with the option to convert an existing server to the new cluster, in a particular environment, generates the following exception: java.lang.NullPointerException at com.ibm.ws.management.configservice.ConfigServiceImpl.setAttribu tes(ConfigServiceImpl.java:1116) at com.ibm.events.admintask.CeiClusterAdminTaskExt.executeStep(CeiC lusterAdminTaskExt.java:202) at com.ibm.websphere.management.cmdframework.provider.AbstractTaskC ommand.executeReal(AbstractTaskCommand.java:839) at com.ibm.websphere.management.cmdframework.provider.AbstractTaskC ommand.execute(AbstractTaskCommand.java:802) ... The particular environment where the exception appears can be obtained through the following steps: 1. Create an application server profile containing a standalone server 2. Install CEI application on the standalone profile. 3. Create a deployment manager profile. 4. Federate the server by running the addNode command. 5. Convert the server to a cluster with the command: "$AdminTask createCluster { -clusterConfig { -clusterName <cluster_name> } -convertServer { -serverNode <server_node> -serverName <server_name> }}"

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server Network Deployment edition V7.0 and * * V8.0 who federate a standalone server and * * then migrate it to a cluster * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: NullPointerException thrown when * * converting a server to a cluster if * * Common Event Infrastructure (CEI) * * application is installed * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** When a WebSphere Application Server node containing a standalone server with a Common Event Infrastructure (CEI) application installed is federated, the scope of the bus used by CEI is updated, but its name is kept unchanged. In the same manner, when the server is migrated to a cluster using the administrative command "$AdminTask createCluster" with the "convertServer" option, the bus used by CEI is identified and its scope is updated, but its name remains unchanged. If the bus used by CEI is not correctly identified by the migration process, the NullPointerException exception can occur with a stack as follows: java.lang.NullPointerException at com.ibm.ws.management.configservice.ConfigServiceImpl.setAttribu tes(ConfigServiceImpl.java:1116) at com.ibm.events.admintask.CeiClusterAdminTaskExt.executeStep(CeiC lusterAdminTaskExt.java:202) at com.ibm.websphere.management.cmdframework.provider.AbstractTaskC ommand.executeReal(AbstractTaskCommand.java:839) at com.ibm.websphere.management.cmdframework.provider.AbstractTaskC ommand.execute(AbstractTaskCommand.java:802) ... Due to this exception the migration process cannot be completed.
Problem conclusion
To prevent the exception, the algorithm for the identification of the CEI bus was enhanced to support the case when a CEI application was initially installed on the standalone server. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix packs 7.0.0.21 and 8.0.0.2.
