Error description

  • The default setting is to evaluate the Expression Language
    (EL) expression in tag files. However, under certain conditions
    it fails to evaluate the EL expression in tag files when
    <el-ignored> is set to true.

Problem summary

    * USERS AFFECTED: IBM WebSphere Application Server version *
    * 7.0 users of EL expression in tag files *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: An EL expression in a tag file is not *
    *                      evaluated.                              *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    Under certain conditions, a tag file might not evaluate the EL
    expression by default. For example, consider the following
    scenario:

    Setting in deployment descriptor:
    <jsp-config>
      <jsp-property-group>
        <url-pattern>/SampleJSPIsELIgnoredTrue.jsp</url-pattern>
        <el-ignored>TRUE</el-ignored>
      </jsp-property-group>

      <jsp-property-group>
        <url-pattern>/SampleJSPIsELIgnoredFalse.jsp</url-pattern>
        <el-ignored>FALSE</el-ignored>
      </jsp-property-group>
    </jsp-config>

    and both JavaServer Pages (JSP) files reference a custom tag,
    SampleTag, which does not have the tag directive attribute
    "IsELIgnored" declared.

    If the first request is made to /SampleJSPIsELIgnoredTrue.jsp,
    this will cause the SampleTag to be translated and compiled
    without evaluating the EL expressions (that is, it inherits the
    el-ignored = true setting from the jsp-property-group of
    /SampleJSPIsELIgnoredTrue.jsp ). Once compiled, the SampleTag
    class will not change until its source is altered or its class
    is deleted.

    It is not a problem if the first request is made to
    /SampleJSPIsELIgnoredFalse.jsp, or the application is
    precompiled before or during the deployment, or the tag
    directive attribute "isELIgnored" is set explicitly in the tag
    files.

Problem conclusion

  • The JSP Container code was modified to correct the default
    behavior of the EL expression's evaluation in the tag files.

    A new WebContainer customer property needs to be set to enable
    the behavior provided by this APAR:
    com.ibm.ws.jsp.enableDefaultIsELIgnoredInTag = true (default
    is false)

    Please refer to the following technote for instructions on
    enabling WebContainer custom properties:

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
    fixpack 7.0.0.11
