Error description
After installing Eclipse (using IM) on a remote Linux server, and then individual developers start it from their local machine. (So this is a shared installation.) After doing that, some of them might want to add some additional third-party plug-ins, using the Eclipse provided mechanism from Help->Install New Software . This fails to install the new plug-ins. (Copies them to the proper location, but Eclipse doesn't recognize them, so they don't show up in the "Installation Details". Problem further documented in bugzilla: https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=300925
Local fix
workaround: edit the file <your Eclipse installation location>/configuration/config.ini and add the following line: osgi.install.area=/<your Eclipse installation location>
