PERFORMANCE DEGRADATION DURING JAX-WS APPLICATION MODIFICATION
IN WEBSPHERE ADMINISTRATIVE CONSOLE

There is performance issue during editing or modification of
enterprise application configurations due to annotation
processing.

Performance issues may be experienced by administrators who
modify large applications.  For example, an administrator may
choose to modify the context root of an application.  Upon
selecting 'Ok' on the console, they may experience a delay
before the application page is redisplayed.  This delay is due
to annotations scanning.

Problem conclusion

In order to determine whether JAX-WS annotations are present
in an application, the Web Services runtime must scan each
class file in the application.  This can be time consuming for
applications with a large number of classes.  To avoid repeated
scanning, the Web Services runtime maintains a cache of found
annotations.  When an application is modified the cache is
removed.  After this time, any console action involving the
application will require a rescan of all the classes to
determine whether JAX-WS annotations are present.
When a 'save' action is performed the cache is rebuilt.

This fix delays the cache removal for minor edits to the
application until a 'save' is performed.  Minor edits include
actions like modifying the context root.  This allows for
subsequent console actions before the 'save' to utilize the
cache and improve performance.  When the 'save' is performed,
the cache will be removed and rebuilt to assure cache
consistency.  Because of this there will still be a
delay when saving large applications.

Note that major application modifications, including adding,
removing, or changing modules, will still result in immediate
cache removal.  This is necessary because new classes have
been added or removed and this invalidates the cached data.
Console actions after such a modification will therefore
experience a delay due to rescanning of all classes.  When a
'save' is performed the cache will once again be rebuilt.

This fix is available for the V6.1 Feature Pack for Web
Services under APAR PK86059.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fix pack 7.0.0.9.  Please refer to the Recommended Updates
