Error description

• IBM Rational ClearCase ncaexported VOBs and Views hosted from a
  RedHat Enterprise 4 VOB server will produce ?Stale NFS file hand
  le? when mounting the export remotely and then cd?ing into eithe
  r a version controlled directory or view-private directory off t
  he root of the VOB.

  To Reproduce:
  
  1)  Create an ncaexported VOB and View combination (as vobadm) o
  n local storage, from a ClearCase VOB server:
     cleartool mkvob -tag /vobs/test-export -ncaexported /ccstg/vo
  bs/test-export.vbs
     cleartool mkview -tag test-export -ncaexported /ccstg/views/t
  est-export.vbs
  
         NOTE:  Default config_spec is in use
  
  2)  Modify the /etc/exports.mvfs and add the VOB/View combinatio
  n for export:
     /view/test-export/vobs/test-export *(rw,fsid=1010)
  
  3)  As the vobadm, set to the View and mount the VOB.  cd into t
  he VOB tag and then add several view private directories as well
   as version-controlled directories to the root of the VOB:
  
  mkdir -p vp_test1/A
  mkdir vp_test2
  cleartool co . -nc
  cleartool mkdir -nc test1 test2
  cd test1
  cleartool mkdir A
  
  4)  Check in the entire set of version controlled directories an
  d then checkin the root of the VOB
  
  5)  Export the VOB/View combination:
     /usr/atria/etc/export_mvfs -a
  
  6)  Go to a client, and as root mount the export:
     mount test-rhas4:/view/test-export/vobs/test-export /mnt/test
  -rhas4 -o vers=3
  
  7)  As the vobadm, cd into the mount point:
     cd /mnt/test-rhas4
  
  8)  ls -la (this will return OK)
  
  9)  cd now into any of the directories and you will receive:
  
     [vobadm]: cd test1
     -bash: cd: test: Stale NFS file handle
  
  NOTE:  If you mount the export with NFS v2, you will be able to
  cd into the directory, but an ls of the directory will produce E
  STALE:
  
     [vobadm]: cd test1
     [vobadm]: ls
     ls: .: Stale NFS file handle
  
  NOTE:  If you try and ls -al the exact path while mounted with N
  FS v2, the following error will occur:
  
     [vobadm]: ls -la /mnt/test-rhas4/test1
     ls: reading directory /mnt/test-rhas4/test1: Input/output err
  or
     total 0
  
  
  NOTE:  If you try and ls -al the exact path while mounted with N
  FS v3, the following error will occur:
  
     [vobadm]: ls -la /mnt/test-rhas4/test1
     ls: /mnt/test-rhas4/test1: Invalid argument
     ls: /mnt/test-rhas4/test1: Stale NFS file handle
  
  
  Workaround:  None
  

Local fix

Problem summary

• ClearCase ncaexported VOBs and Views hosted from a RedHat
  Enterprise 4 VOB server will produce ?Stale NFS file handle?
  when mounting the export remotely and then cd?ing into
  either a version controlled directory or view-private
  directory off the root of the VOB.
  

Problem conclusion

• A fix is available in ClearCase version 7.0.0.6, 7.0.1.5,
  and 7.1.0.2.
