Error description

  • The IBM SDK for Java version 1.3.1 Service Refresh 27 (SR27)
    supplies the IBM Java Cryptography Extension (IBMJCE) via a
    jarfile ibmjceprovider located in the <JAVA_HOME>/lib/ext/
    directory.

    This file is not marked as compatible with the Resettable mode
    of the IBM JVM. Attempts to use the features provided by this
    extension will result in the JVM being marked as unresettable
    and the following Resettable Event occurring:

    [EVENT 0x14]
    TIME=24/01/2007 at 11:48:49.108
    THREAD=main (0:21f22138)
    CLASS=UnresettableEvent
    DESCRIPTION=Unchecked extension loading class:
    com.ibm.crypto.provider.IBMJCE from path
    /usr/lpp/java/IBM/J1.3/lib/ext/ibmjceprovider.jar
    [END EVENT]

    PE INFORMATION:
    PTF UK19599 (Java 1.3.1 HJVA130 SR27) is in Error.

    USERS AFFECTED:
    Users who utilize BOTH the resettable features of the Java
    Virtual Machine (JVM) AND the Java Cryptography Extension (JCE).
    The Persistant Reusable Virtual Machine (Resettable Mode) is
    enabled typically within Middleware systems such as CICS and
    DB2. It can be enabled on a standalone basis via the option
    -Xresettable.

    USER IMPACT:
    APAR PK31485 / PTF UK19599 / Java 1.3.1 SR27 fixed the problems
    it reported, but introduced a new problem.

    Attempting to use the the supplied Java Cryptography Extension
    will render the JVM unresettable.

    Usage of SR27 in a normal non-resettable environment is NOT
    affected by this APAR.

    ONLY users who are using BOTH resettable mode AND
    ibmjceprovider.jar cryptography are affected.

    VERIFICATION STEPS
    The ibm.jvm.events.output file will contain the above event when
    Java is run in resettable mode and any cryptographic features
    are used under Java 1.3.1 SR27.

Local fix

  • Contact Java Level 2 for a replacement ibmjceprovider.jar file.

    The MANIFEST.MF file in the ibmjceprovider.jar file must contain
    the following line:
    IBM-Reusable-JVM-Compatible: True

    Editing that file to include that line and rebuilding the jar
    file is sufficient to work-around this problem.

    ---

    If you are NOT using RESETTABLE/REUSABLE mode AND
    ibmjceprovider.jar, NO ACTION IS NEEDED.
    Only users of BOTH features are affected.
