Error description

  • In DB2 Administration Tool an ALC smart alter operation to
    append a new column defined as NOT NULL with a user defined
    default can fail with sqlcode104 ( -104 ).
    .
    The default value appears with an extra set of quote marks as
    shown in the following:
        SQL ALTER TABLE "C717086"."TBDAIRY" ADD "ADDED_COL" CHAR(1)
    NOT NULL WITH DEFAULT ''D'';
    .
    Execution produces error messages similar to the following:
    .
    DSNT408I SQLCODE = -104, ERROR:  ILLEGAL SYMBOL "D". SOME
       SYMBOLS THAT MIGHT BE LEGAL ARE: FOR NOT WITH UPDATE DEFAULT
       FIELDPROC GENERATED CONSTRAINT
    .
    Additional symptoms: extra quotes
