Error description
When a getter method has been annotated with @XmlMixed the code generator is assuming that the value returned from the getter method is always a non-null list and that is the cause of the NullPointerException.
Local fix
As an alternative workaround which would allow the customer to keep the JAXB optimizations enabled, the customer could modify the getter method in their application to always return a non-null list. For example: @XmlMixed public List<String> getDescription() { if (Description == null) { Description = new ArrayList<String>(); } return Description; }
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The IBM JAXB Unmarshaller may throw a * * NullPointerException when attempting * * to write a value to a @XmlMixed * * property. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: Install a fix pack that contains this * * APAR. * **************************************************************** When a getter method has been annotated with @XmlMixed the JAXB Unmarshaller's code generator is assuming that the value returned from the getter method is always a non-null list. When the generated code is executed at runtime a NullPointerException will be thrown if the list is null.
Problem conclusion
The problem was resolved by adding logic to the IBM JAXB Unmarshaller's code generator to generate a method for processing @XmlMixed that contains a null check before accessing the list. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix pack 9.0.0.8.
