Error description
While FTPing a file using a multi byte character set (MBCS) and having an active FTP DEBUG trace for any options other than ACC or NONE the trace message NC0497 convertMB: ip inputbuffer isz inputbuffersize op outputbuffer osz outputbuffersize is generated. When many and or large files are transferred using MBCS this can result in an excessive amount of messages such that disk space to store the associated log messages may be depleted. The debug message NC0497 convertMB should not be generated for almost all FTP DEBUG trace options.
Local fix
When FTPing a file using MBCS only enable FTP DEBUG trace options for a limited number of connections or a limited time. Disable FTP DEBUG tracing using option NONE.
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: * * All users of the IBM Communications Server for z/OS Version * * 2 Release 1 and 2: FTP * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: * * When using MBCS encoding with any DEBUG trace (except ACC), * * the ftp log is flooded with "NC0497 convertMB: ip * * inputbuffer isz inputbuffersize op * * outputbuffer osz outputbuffersize" debug message. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * * Apply PTF. * **************************************************************** The problem can be summarized as follows - 1. An FTP connection using MBCS encoding 2. Enable any DEBUG trace option (other than ACC) 3. Transfer a file 4. The ftp log shows "NC0497 convertMB: ip inputbuffer isz inputbuffersize op outputbuffer osz outputbuffersize" debug message every time a piece of data is converted . The above message was of type error but was outside the error path. Enabling any DEBUG option (other than ACC), enables the error debug flag in FTP. Hence, this message was getting logged every time a piece of data was being converted whether there was an error or not.
Problem conclusion
Changed the type of the DEBUG message from error to UTL.
