PI79034: For products that embed Liberty, some bootstrap.properties do not take effect at server startup

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Certain properties defined in bootstrap.properties do not
take effect at runtime when the server is started with the
    com.ibm.wsspi.kernel.embeddable.ServerBuilder SPI that is
used by some products that embed Liberty.
Note that this does not affect Liberty when used as a
standalone product. The errors that are generated will vary
depending on which bootstrap property did not take effect
    during runtime.

Local fix

  • Specify the property directly as a JVM System Property instead
of using bootstrap.properties. The process for doing this may
vary based on which embedding product is being used. For
example, this can be accomplished in z/OS Connect EE by
following the instructions at this dwAnswers link
    https://developer.ibm.com/answers/questions/351636/%7B%7D/

    ****************************************************************
Liberty provides an SPI for embedders to use,
    com.ibm.wsspi.kernel.embeddable.ServerBuilder, that allows a
Liberty server to be started programmatically inside an existing
JVM. When Liberty is started this way, certain bootstrap
    properties such as com.ibm.ws.tcpchannel.useZosAio,
    com.ibm.ws.zos.core.angelRequired, and
com.ibm.ws.zos.core.angelName are not properly read by the
runtime and therefore do not take effect when specified. Note
that this does NOT affect Liberty when used as a standalone
product, nor does it affect every embedder of Liberty, because
not all embedders use this SPI to start the Liberty server.

Problem conclusion

  • Code was changed so that com.ibm.ws.tcpchannel.useZosAio,
    com.ibm.ws.zos.core.angelRequired, and
com.ibm.ws.zos.core.angelName take effect when the Liberty
server is started inside an existing JVM using the ServerBuilder
    SPI.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix
pack 17.0.0.3. Please refer to the Recommended Updates page for
