Error description

We see below NullPointerExceptions in logs.  When ever the
session manager was not able to find the session context, these
below exceptions are thrown.

Cause:
Most of the times these exceptions are due to the fact that,
when the customers modify the deployment.xml file directly for
any session manager changes. This gets resolved by redeploying
the application.

Instead of throwing the below NullPointerExceptions, session
manager should add some nice message saying that the application
need to be deployed or the configuration changes should not be
done directly etc.

Local fix

Problem summary

When the customers modify the server.xml file or
deployment.xml file directly to change the session management
configuration, it may result java.lang.NullPointerException.

Problem conclusion

Code changes were made to prompt better messages and indicate
the missing contexts from the session management
configuration.
The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for
inclusion in WebSphere Application Server Fixpack 8.5.5.12,
and WebSphere Application Server Fixpack 9.0.0.4.  Please
