Error description
When accessing the /dev filesystem on a Linux system via an IBM Rational ClearCase dynamic view using a view extended path in the form of /view/{view-tag}/dev, a kernel crash may occur. This has been most recently observed on Red Hat Linux 7.3. Accessing this filesystem using a view-extended path is not a supported operation, but this should not cause a kernel crash.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: * * Users of ClearCase dynamic views on supported versions of * * Linux. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: * * As documented in ClearCase technote 1259280, accessing * * non-VOB files using a fully qualified view-extended pathname * * on Linux kernels after 2.4.18 is not supported due to kernel * * limitations. In most cases, the result of the command is * * only that incomplete data is presented. However, on some * * kernels, this may cause a system crash. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * ****************************************************************
Problem conclusion
The non-VOB pathname access using a view-extended pathname is still not supported, but ClearCase versions 8.0.1.16, 9.0.0.5 and 9.0.1.1 have been updated so that these references will not cause a system crash.
