PI74792: java.lang.NullPointerException when starting an .ear application with autoExpand="true" in server.xml

Error description

When an application EAR file is placed in the liberty
server_root/dropins folder and autoExpand is set to true in
server.xml, the application will fail to start after the
server is started.

On IBM i, if an EAR (Enterprise Application aRchive) file is
placed in the server's dropins folder and autoExpand="true" is
specified in server.xml, for example:
...
<applicationManager autoExpand="true"/>
...
The application will fail to start with the following error in
the Application server's console.log:
[ERROR   ] CWWKZ0002E: exception occurred while starting
application. The exception message was:
java.lang.NullPointerException

Problem conclusion

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix
pack 17.0.0.1.  Please refer to the Recommended Updates page for

Temporary fix

Grant user profile QEJBSVR All authority to the
${server.config.dir}/apps folder:
Run the following IBM i command:
CHGAUT OBJ('<server config directory>/apps') USER(QEJBSVR)
DTAAUT(*RWX) OBJAUT(*ALL) SUBTREE(*ALL)

Example of <server config directory>:
/qibm/userdata/websphere/liberty/BASE/wlp/usr/servers/<server_na
me>, where <server_name> is the liberty WebSphere Application
Server server name.
