APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • A running Liberty server does not detect changes to an EAR
    file if the applicationManager autoExpand property is set to
    true in the server.xml
    <applicationManager autoExpand="true"/>

Local fix

  • If your Liberty server is running with <applicationManager
    autoExpand="true"/> set in your server.xml, then the Liberty
    server would need to be stopped and started for the changes to
    an ear files to be detected.

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    When autoExpand is set to true in the applicationManager
    configuration, the runtime will automatically expand
    applications (for example ear and war applications) into the
    apps directory. For ear applications, the application monitor
    is monitoring the expanded directory for updates, not the
    original un-expanded ear file. If the original ear file is
    updated, the update will not be detected and the Liberty server
    will continue to use the previous version of the application.

Problem conclusion

  • Code was added to monitor the original ear file for updates, and
    to reload the application when an update is detected.
