Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application *
    *                  Server Liberty - Web Container              *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The JVM fails to shut down in certain *
    * cases when an Asynchronous Servlet has *
    *                      been processed.                         *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    When using an Asynchronous Servlet there are some 'background'
    threads created by the server from a
    java.util.concurrent.ScheduledThreadPoolExecutor, which are not
    from the 'default' server java.util.concurrent.Executor.
    Those threads are non-daemon threads, and they are not
    terminated when issuing the server stop command.

    This problem has been reported as an issue in environments that
    embed Liberty such as CICS. For most users of Liberty server
    this would not be a problem because normally when the server
    'stops', the JVM is terminated.

Problem conclusion

  • The problem reported has been fixed to ensure threads are
    terminated when issuing the server stop command.

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix
    pack 16.0.0.4. Please refer to the Recommended Updates page for
