Error description

  • You notice the following undocumented behavior for the Syntax
Editor Window for IBM SPSS Release 24:

    Behavior:
    a) No color coding when you use a varlist proceeded by slash
although this is required according to syntax help documentation
    b) No dropdown list for the 3 measurement levels when you use a
    slash for /varlist
    c) Does not recognize a typo when you enter a wrong measurement
    level

Steps to replicate and current behavior:

    - For the example a new file was created with no data. The file
only contains some variables ID, v1 to v5. On variable view
unknown measurement level for all variables is defined.
    - Open a new Syntax file and type the command:
    Variable level

    - Open syntax Help for this command, you will see below info
that you should use a slash "/" when you introduce another
variable list for another measurement level and an example:

    Reference > Command Syntax Reference
    VARIABLE LEVEL

    VARIABLE LEVEL varlist ({SCALE }) ... [/varlist...]
                            {ORDINAL}
                            {NOMINAL}
    Example

    VARIABLE LEVEL sales95 sales96 (SCALE)
        /region division (NOMINAL)
        /expense (ORDINAL).

    - Next on your syntax editor after variable level type id v1
    (NOMINAL)
    Variable level id v1 (NOMINAL)

-> You see on typing of the level NOMINAL that you get a
dropdown for the 3 possible levels and after you finished the
line NOMINAL is colored correctly as valid syntax.

    - Next, below the above type a new varlist proceeded by a
slash / according to syntax help and stop at SCAL :
    /v2 v3 (SCAL

-> No dropdown/context menu for the 3 possible levels is
    displayed on syntax editor

    - Finish the command and type below:

    Variable level ID v1 (NOMINAL)
      /v2 v3 (SCALE)
      /v4 v5 (ORDINAL).

-> You see SCALE and ORDINAL are not color coded and also are
not recognized when you type them incorrectly.

Local fix

  • This was reported to IBM SPSS Development.
Please note this is not a problem in the function of the
command. When you run the syntax with the slash /varlist it
    works fine.
As a workaround to get color coding and the dropdown just remove
the Slash character from your varlist command, then the command
keywords will be color coded correctly and you get the dropdown
    context menus.

    Variable level ID v1 (NOMINAL)
      v2 v3 (SCALE)
      v4 v5 (ORDINAL).
