Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of HPFPU Fast Path Advanced Tool * * (FPA) in Fast Path Solution Pack Version 1 * * Release 3 (FMID: HAHQ130). * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: FPA INDEXBLD adds a new function to * * physically delete index pointer * * segments whose delete byte is on. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** This APAR adds a new Freespace Reclaim function to FPA. The Freespace Reclaim function reclaims CIs in secondary index database data sets without bringing the DEDB and the secondary index databases offline. This function is effective for secondary indexes that use a HISAM database with no overflow data set and when the HISAM database contains many index pointer segments whose delete byte flag is turned on. When IMS issues DL/I calls to delete the source segments in the primary DEDB, the index pointer segments in the secondary index databases are not physically deleted but their delete byte flag is turned on to indicate that the segment is no longer used. This results in many unused index pointer segments using up the space in the database. The Freespace Reclaim function issues DL/I GN calls to secondary index database to physically delete such unused index pointer segments. The Freespace Reclaim function is more effective if used in combination with the CA Reclaim function of z/OS. If CA Reclaim is enabled, after the Freespace Reclaim function deletes all index pointer segments in a VSAM Control Area (CA), CA Reclaim reclaims the CA for storing new index pointer segments. For more information about z/OS CA Reclaim, see z/OS DFSMS Using Data Sets. The Freespace Reclaim function is not effective for secondary indexes that use a SHISAM database or a HISAM database with overflow data set. To run the Freespace Reclaim function, specify INDEXBLD command in the HFPSYSIN data set and specify IDXPROC=FS_RECLAIM option for the INDEXBLD command. If the FS_RECLAIM_REPORT=YES is specified, the Freespace Reclaim function generates the Secondary Index Freespace Reclaim report and Result of Access Method Services report to provide the result of the Freespace Reclaim function. This enhancements are being implemented as a result of RFE requirements 83473.
