APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • Getting a connection time out when using a secure FTP connection
in z/OS Explorer, the following error messages can be observed
in the client log:

MESSAGE com.ibm.cics.core.comm.ConnectionException:
java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out: connect

IZE0823E Error occurred getting data sets

This issue was discovered when a NAT firewall was in use between
the client and host systems.

Recreation Steps:
1. The z/OS Explorer FTP client requests data transfer.
2. The request is routed through a NAT firewall which passed the
packet to the correct host based on the port being used.
3. The FTP Server responds with a suggested host and port for
the passive FTP connection (which is the wrong host)
4. Often routers are able to dynamically rewrite the packets
returned with the router's external IP address. However, this
is not possible when using encrypted FTP.

Problem summary

  • FTP has an extended passive mode that needs to be set for ipv4
connections working through firewalls.

Problem conclusion

  • For GA code the FTP connection dialog has three radio buttons
(that are new) to allow setting of the transfer mode to be
active / passive / extended passive.  The single "Active
Transfer Mode" checkbox has been removed.  Existing data will
migrate as there is a string value for connection mode that had
PASSIVE or ACTIVE and now has EXTENDEDPASSIVE as a 3rd possible
value.

This APAR will be available in IBM Explorer for z/OS V3.0.0.5
