Error description

  • Liberty on z/OS fails to route messages to MSGLOG DD card
    under certain conditions, for example when the DD card is
    configured to spin off output, as in the below example:

    //MSGLOG   DD SYSOUT=*,FREE=CLOSE,SPIN=(UNALLOC,1M)

    Under these conditions only a single line of output is
    written to MSGLOG. Further output may or may not be logged
    to a series of files in the server's user directory (which
    is typically the server directory).

    ****************************************************************
    Liberty on z/OS fails to route messages to MSGLOG DD card under
    certain conditions, for example when the DD card is configured
    to spin off output, as in the below example:

    //MSGLOG   DD SYSOUT=*,FREE=CLOSE,SPIN=(UNALLOC,1M)

    Under these conditions only a single line of output is written
    to MSGLOG. Further output may or may not be logged to a series
    of files in the HFS under the server's user directory (which is
    typically the server directory).

Problem conclusion

  • The problem happens because Liberty opens and closes the DD
    card's FILE handle for every line of output. Upon the first
    FILE close, after writing the first line, the DD card is closed
    and spun off. Subsequent FILE handles do not re-open the DD
    card; instead they allocate a new file in the HFS under the
    address space's user directory, and the output is written to the
    HFS file.

    The fix is to keep the DD card's FILE handle open for the life
    of the Liberty server.

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix
    pack 8.5.5.9. Please refer to the Recommended Updates page for
