(rr or r is a code for the IMS release number and nnnn or nnn is the sequence number of a specific catalog directory data set.) This last qualifier was shortened from eight to six characters to allow the longest possible high-level qualifiers to produce data set names that fit within the 44-character maximum data set name length. In the failing scenario an existing catalog directory was used because MANAGEDACBS=UPDATE or MANAGEDACBS=STAGE was used, and the existing directory data set names had the original longer (eight-character) suffix. (In this particular case the high-level qualifiers of the name were short enough that the 44-character limit wouldn't have been exceeded.) The code that was trying to allocate these data sets incorrectly interpreted only the first six characters of the last qualifier of the data set name, thus causing the allocation failure.
Problem conclusion
The code in module DFS3DU10 to allocate existing catalog directory data sets was corrected to use the entire data set name previously recorded in the bootstrap data set (last qualifier of BSDS).
