APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • When a URL request is audited for valid values, there should
    be
    more detail than today's
    current:java.lang.IllegalArgumentException.     There are
    multiple things that could be wrong and share some
    additional
    detail on why the URI was an illegal argument would be more
    helpful information.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application *
    *                  Server Liberty Profile                      *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Exception from WSUtil.resolveURI method *
    * does not provide sufficient *
    *                      information.                            *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    If a user invokes the WSUtil.resolveURI(String uri) method with
    a URL that contains more parent directories than actual
    directories, this method will throw an IllegalArgumentException,
    but the message text in the exception does not explain what is
    invalid.  It should.

    Here is an example of an invalid URI that contains more parent
    directories than actual directories:
    /dir1/dir2/../../../../someFile.txt

    This is an invalid argument to the resolveURI method, but it is
    not clear from the exception why it is invalid.

Problem conclusion

  • The fix for this APAR is to improve the message in the exception
    thrown. The message from the exception will now look like
    this:
    The specified URI, <uri>, is invalid because it contains more
    references to parent directories ("..") than is possible.

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix
    pack 8.5.5.9. Please refer to the Recommended Updates page for
