Error description

  • Random abends (S0C4, S0C6) processing IMS V13 log with records
containing compressed data. The IMS x'9904' record may be trun-
cated at any point and a continuation record created. If the
truncation occurs in a block of compressed data, which is then
passed to the Data Compression and Expansion routine to be
expanded with the original non-truncated length specified, the
expansion fails but during the process unrelated storage may be
overlaid at random causing subsequent abends to occur.
In once case an ABEND0C4 occured in ALZ501 at offset x'559A'.
                                        ABENDS0C4 ABENDS0C6 ABEND0C6
Note: For IMS PI V240 see APAR PI40569 as this is FF there.

Random abends (eg S0C4, S0C6) processing IMS V13 log with
    records containing compressed data.

Problem conclusion

  • The IMS x'9904' record may be truncated at any point and a
continuation record created. If the truncation occurs in a
block of compressed data, which is then passed to the Data
Compression and Expansion routine to be expanded with the
original non-truncated length specified, the expansion fails
but during the process unrelated storage may be overlaid at
at random causing subsequent abends to occur. In processing
for the IMS x'9904' record, before calling the Data
Compression routine to expand compressed data the supplied
length must be validated against the actual data length
to ensure truncation has not occurred.
