Error description

  • Abend 5C6-00E20017 after starting MQ global trace:
    START TRACE(GLOBAL) DEST(RES,GTF) CLASS(*) RMID(*)
Change team found a problem with the way MQ manages its stack
storage when writing trace. The stack section for the trace
routine is sometimes being marked as free while it is still in
use. This doesn't cause an issue for the trace function itself
as the storage is still accessible. However, when the trace
routine completes it tries to free the stack section again and
it is detected that the storage is not allocated. This is
    reported as the 5C6-00E20017 abend.

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
When MQ GTF trace is started on a queue manager which previously
had no trace active, CSQWVCOL may allocate stack storage for
trace with incorrect settings. This can cause the storage to be
    released while still in use.

Later in processing, CSQWVCOL tries to release the storage
again, and CSQSTACK issues abend 5C6-00E20017 because the
storage being released is not in the allocated portion of the
    stack.

An alternative error can occur if the prematurely released stack
is reused. Overlaid data in the reused segment can cause various
    abends such as 0C4-00000011.

Problem conclusion

  • CSQWVCOL has been modified to correctly set the values related
to its stack storage in this case, ensuring that the storage is
not released while still in use.
