Error description

  • When the z/VM SMTP server is processing incoming mail and is
not able to resolve the hostname of a mail recipient, it is
supposed to queue up the request that it sends to the resolver
on the resolver retry queue and keep trying every 20 minutes
(the default retry interval) for three days (the default retry
age) before giving up and sending error mail back to the mail
sender. However, in some cases, the SMTP server immediately
attempts to send back error mail after a failed attempt to
resolve the recipient host name. If the resolver function is
not working due to network failure, then the attempt to send
back the error mail may fail as well. The following messages
    may occur in this scenario:
    .
#257 Rcpt to unknown host: recipient.ibm.com
DTCSMT1311I Generating Note 00380285 as Error Notification
DTCSMT1313I Unable to deliver Note: 00380284 to <sender.com>

Problem conclusion

  • Updated the SendRQR routine in SMTPRES PASCAL in order to have
mail that is intended for a recipient whose hostname cannot be
resolved placed on the resolver retry queue. The mail will now
be retried every resolver retry interval for the resolver retry
age prior to being sent back to the sender as error mail.
