Error description

  • In Websphere Application Server v8.5.5,when using JPA
    with an Informix database, locks are being held on the database
    sequences and are never released. This is due to JPA
    running "SET ENVIRONMENT RETAINUPDATELOCKS 'ALL'" .

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application *
    *                  Server V8.5.0 and V8.5.5 who make           *
    * use of an InformixDictionary. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: OpenJPA's InformixDictionary            *
    * generates an SQL which could cause *
    * locks to be held longer than desired. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    When using the InformixDictionary in OpenJPA, the following
    SQL is run on each connection creation:
    "SET ENVIRONMENT RETAINUPDATELOCKS 'ALL'"
    A user may not want this SQL to be run. As such, a system
    property has been created to allow a user to disable this SQL
    should they so choose.

Problem conclusion

  • With this fix, a system property has been added to the
    OpenJPA's InfomixDictionary to allow a user to disable
    the 'RETAINUPDATELOCKS' SQL. To enabled the code of this fix,
    set the following property in your persistence.xml file:

    <property name="openjpa.jdbc.DBDictionary"
    value="informix(disableRetainUpdateLocksSQL=true)" />

    This property could instead be set as a JVM system property.

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for
    inclusion in Service Level (Fix Pack) 8.5.5.6 of WebSphere
    Application Server version 8.5.5.
