Error description
Connection pool for the JCA connection factory becomes empty after several instances of an exception are encountered. The exception occurs in the getConnection method. A sample stack trace is below Trace: SourceId: com.ibm.ejs.j2c.MCWrapper ExtendedMessage: BBOO0220E: J2CA0021E: An exception occurred while trying to get a Connection from the Managed Connection resource No longer available : javax.resource.ResourceException: BBOA8201E: Unable to locate requested Registration Name : XXXX at com.ibm.ws390.ola.jca.ManagedConnectionImpl. getConnection(ManagedConnectionImpl.java:853) at com.ibm.ejs.j2c.MCWrapper.getConnection(MCWrapper.java:2313) at com.ibm.ejs.j2c.ConnectionManager. allocateConnection(ConnectionManager.java:1046) at com.ibm.ws390.ola.jca.ConnectionFactoryImpl. getConnection(ConnectionFactoryImpl.java:151) ... If exceptions have occurred on all connections so that there are no available connections to be used, you can see an error like this: Trace: SourceId: com.ibm.ejs.j2c.FreePool ExtendedMessage: J2CA0045E: Connection not available while invoking method createOrWaitForConnection for resource WOLABean: caught execute exception: com.ibm.websphere.ce.j2c.ConnectionWaitTimeoutException: Connection not available, Timed out waiting for 180000 com.ibm.websphere.ce.j2c.ConnectionWaitTimeoutException: Connection not available, Timed out waiting for 180000 at com.ibm.ejs.j2c.FreePool. createOrWaitForConnection(FreePool.java:1779) at com.ibm.ejs.j2c.PoolManager.reserve(PoolManager.java:3414) at com.ibm.ejs.j2c.PoolManager.reserve(PoolManager.java:2644) at com.ibm.ejs.j2c.ConnectionManager. allocateMCWrapper(ConnectionManager.java:1545) at com.ibm.ejs.j2c.ConnectionManager. allocateConnection(ConnectionManager.java:1028) ...

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server V8.0 and V8.5 * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Message J2CA0045E is seen when * * getting a WOLA connection. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** When attempting to get a WebSphere Optimized Local Adapters (WOLA) connection from the JCA connection pool, message J2CA0045E is seen and a com.ibm.websphere.ce.j2c.ConnectionWaitTimeout exception is thrown. Prior to this, one or more javax.resource.ResourceExceptions are thrown when attempting to get a WOLA connection. In some cases, when an exception is thrown from the getConnection method, a connection is leaked from the connection pool. Eventually, all connections will be leaked from the pool, and message J2CA0045E will be issued whenever a getConnection is attempted.
Problem conclusion
Code was added to prevent connections from leaking from the connection pool when an exception is thrown from the getConnection method. APAR PI22672 is currently targeted for inclusion in Fix Packs 8.0.0.10 and 8.5.5.5 of WebSphere Application Server for z/OS.
