APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • At the operating system console, message "DSL001A Enter a MERVA
command" is issued. An operator inadvertently replied "C". This
is the abbreviation of the CANCEL command and resulted in MERVA
closing down and a significant business outage.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All MERVA users. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: An operator at the system console may *
    * inadvertently enter the MERVA CANCEL *
    * command, which causes MERVA to *
    *                      terminate immediately.                  *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: MERVA can now be customized in DSLPRM *
    * to terminate only with confirmation. *
    ****************************************************************
When prompted to enter a MERVA command, an operator at the
system console inadvertently replied "C", the abbreviation
of the CANCEL command. MERVA immediately terminated.

Problem conclusion

  • A new DSLPARM parameter is introduced to determine how to
    terminate MERVA.

    EXCONF = NO | YES

    If EXCONF=NO is specified,
MERVA terminates immediately when command TERMINAT
(abbreviated T) or CANCEL (abbreviated C) has been
entered or issued. This is the default.

    If EXCONF=YES is specified,
a confirmation is requested to terminate MERVA.
When command TERMINAT (T) or CANCEL (C) has been
entered or issued, MERVA is set to Terminate Pending
     or Cancel Pending status.
The pending termination can either be confirmed or revoked.
     If confirmed, MERVA terminates.
If revoked, MERVA does not terminate.

Two new commands are introduced to confirm or revoke a pending
    termination.
    - Command CONFIRM confirms the pending termination. MERVA
terminates. The command can be abbreviated up to at least CONF.
    - Command NOCONF revokes the pending termination. MERVA
does not terminate. The command can be abbreviated up to at
     least NOCO.

Termination can be pending only if command TERMINAT (T) or
CANCEL (C) has been entered or issued without parameter DUMP or
    ABDUMP in the following environments:
    - At the system console.
    - In the command function CMD or MSC.
    - From a nucleus program or batch program.

An operator at the system console can resolve a pending
termination that originates from the command function or a
program. The operator first enters command T or C. Then
the operator enters either command CONFIRM (MERVA terminates)
or NOCONF (MERVA does not terminate). This is exclusive for
the system console and does not apply to the command function
or a program. In those environments, only the user who set MERVA
to Terminate Pending or Cancel Pending status can confirm or
    revoke the pending termination.

After it has issued a TERMINAT (T) or CANCEL (C) command,
a nucleus or batch program should be prepared to confirm or
revoke the pending termination by issuing either the CONFIRM or
    NOCONF command.

When an API program issues TERMINAT (T) or CANCEL (C) without
parameter DUMP or ABDUMP, MERVA always terminates immediately
    even if EXCONF=YES is specified.

Four new operator messages are available: DSL230I to DSL233I.
Use the SHOW command to see the message description.
    For example, SHOW DSL230I.
