Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server V8.0 and V8.5 * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: No control on FFDC file created when * * exception is thrown. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** Whenever any FFDC file is created, there is no control on the size of that file. It could vary as per the size of exception dumped, which can eat up the filesystem. In order to control this, a new feature has been introduced.
Problem conclusion
In order to control the size of FFDC incident file, we can make use of one property which is present in ffdc configuration files. There are three files present in WAS_HOME/properties which can be configured to control size of file. These files are ffdcStart.properties ffdcStop.properties ffdcRun.properties In all the above three files , there is a property already present IntrospectMaxSize which should be configured for controlling size. IntrospectMaxSize, number of bytes to be used when using the introspector has a default value of 1024 kilobytes. This means that if you will not modify this value after installation, you will not see FFDC incident files more than 1 megabytes. Range for this parameter is from 10 kilobytes to 100 megabytes, which mean that if someone will try to configure the value which is outside this range will be forced to use the nearest limit value. ie. If someone configures 20480000 as a value for IntrospectMaxSize , then value set will be 100 megabytes as the value configured is out of the permissible range. Similarly, if some tries to put value as 1, then value will be set to 10 kilobyte as 1 is outside of the permissible range. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix packs 8.0.0.10 and 8.5.5.4.
